Augmented Reality(AR) — Overview of the future
Augmented Reality
In our modern and scientific era technology resides in our hands and that technology can perform various tasks and functionalities. One of the technology in our ocean of technologies are Augmented reality.
Actually what AR is:
Augmented reality is the real-world environment with an interactive experience, where the objects that reside in the real world are enhanced by computer-generated perceptual information, sometimes across multiple sensory modalities, including visual, auditory, haptic, somatosensory and olfactory. It is the combination of real and virtual (Computer-generated) worlds with an extra layer of digital information.
The camera has no inherent sense of direction. You can’t command it to take pictures of things that are in front of or behind you. You can only point it in the direction you want. It is an array of sensors that burn up when light rays shooting through a hole pour down on it.
Giving the camera a sense of direction and an understanding of the world is a complex process. The field of study that deals with analyzing and understanding pixels are called Computer Vision (CV).
To see the world as we do, classify objects as we do, and to learn to adapt to the changes in the world as we do is Machine Learning (ML).
We learn and we become a little more intelligent. When a machine learns and produces results that are a little better than before, its Artificial Intelligence (AI).
ML, AI, and CV, along with a few hardware sensors that form the IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), make AR possible.
At the heart of an augmented reality app is the camera. Everything flows from the data that the camera is bringing into the system.
Self-driving cars have solved that problem to a large extent. The hardware on those cars is more advanced than what’s available on the mobile. On the mobile, we are still working to build the foundational layers of understanding the physical world.
How it is used:
Augmented reality is a technology that works on computer vision based recognition algorithms to augment sound, video, graphics, and other sensor-based inputs on real-world objects using the camera of your device.
VR vs AR:
Virtual reality replaces what people see and experience augmented reality actually adds to it. Using devices such as HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Google Cardboard, VR covers and replaces users’ field of vision entirely, while AR projects images in front of them in a fixed area
Companies working on AR:
- Apple
- Microsoft
- Niantic
- Zapper Ltd
- Magic leaps
- AR labs
Brands experiencing AR:
Gucci
Gucci is a luxury fashion brand. One of the main reasons retails markets invest in AR is for their customer’s feel-good experience and to make better product decisions. Gucci added the AR feature to its app to let users for augmenting shoe shopping ‘try on shoes’ in AR.
Gucci augmented shoe shopping
Toyota
Toyota is the leading motor car manufacturing company across the world. Toyota launches its hybrid AR app in 2019, that allows the customer to understand the better knowledge about the car model.
Dulux
Dulux is a famous color paint product manufacturing company. Dulux uses the AR in their home interior app named Dulux visualizer in a simple and more effective way — to see how a wall looks like when it is painted in different colors.
and more top brands in the world like Adidas, ASOS, IKEA, Amazon, Youtube adds the feature of AR to it for the customer’s easy understanding and decision making.
Conclusion:
Our brain is our hardware and our intelligence which is our software has evolved over a million years. The camera is a little over 100 years old, and machine learning is newer than that.
There are many challenges to getting on-line. Cloud computing is a real thing, and with the upcoming 5G network speeds, we should be able to use the power of the cloud and stream the results back to the phone in the real-world.
AR has enormous potential in education, travel, fashion, retail, utility, entertainment, publishing, remote guidance, games…the list is growing.
Investors investing billions of dollars in the Augmented reality field because of its faster growth which eventually improves the way we connect.
Anyway, the world is not going to stop and new inventions in technology won’t stop. The future will witness the unbelievable inventions with the use of AI and ML. The future will surpass history, looking forward to it.
