Coronavirus latest: death rates worst in Europe, testing continues under target
The death toll from Covid-19 continued to rise. On Wednesday, the government announced there were 201,000 confirmed cases and 30,076 deaths of people who had tested positive for the disease in hospitals and care homes. Many publications, including NewScientist, noted that this was the highest death toll in Europe. Despite this, prime minister Boris Johnson is due to lift some restrictions on Sunday. A test, track and trace strategy will be essential to easing the lock-down, but publications including The Guardian noted that after hitting its 100,000 tests target for one day by counting tests in the post, the government has gone back to consistently missing its target.
