Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to a technological capability where machines can simulate intelligence like human beings and in fact even perform better than them in many spheres. There are so many ways in which AI impacts our daily lives.

From simple things like reading emails to complex activities like booking a vacation, AI is everywhere.

Let’s find out how we use Artificial Intelligence on a regular basis with our friend Adam (our imaginary friend who loves to use technology on a daily basis like a smartphone.) There is a reason why it is called a smartphone, isn’t it?

Weather Forecast

Adam wakes up in the morning to go to school. He peeps out of the window and looks at the dark clouds. He isn’t sure how warm or cold it’s going to be during the day. So he asks Alexa/ Siri/ Google Assistant about the weather. Digital assistants like Alexa give him all the details about the weather forecasted for the day. This helps him to plan his day ahead. This is a fine example of AI.

Music Playlist

Let’s go further. Adam wants to listen to some music while he is getting ready for school. His past music selection consists mainly of Hip Hop. Alexa chooses to play songs from Eminem and Drake. Adam enjoys the latest hits from his favourite artists. Adam is able to play music without much efforts from his side like changing the station or selecting individual music tracks. Well, how did this happen? Music streaming services monitor your listening habits and using artificial intelligence to recommend some songs for you.

Email Segregation

Adam wants to quickly check his email before he leaves for school. He has been waiting for an update on his assignment from his Math teacher. He quickly logs on to his email account to find out that the assignment has been approved by his teacher. He is happy and ready to go about his day. Most of the email applications use AI to segregate emails into spam, promotions, social media updates, etc. This helps in saving time for the user as he doesn’t have to go through many emails to find the important ones.

Social Media

Adam checks his social media on his way to school. He checks the trending topics on Twitter, comments on his friend’s Facebook posts and participates in an online poll. Social media companies like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc. use big data and artificial intelligence to display relevant advertisements, fight cyberbullying and even auto-delete offensive comments. They are growing in strength with the help of AI.

Search Engines

During school, Adam searches for images for his school project. Adam has been working on this project for a few weeks now. Adam uses Google search to get the desired images quickly to complete the project. In order to give the best possible results matching a user’s query, Google’s algorithm uses artificial intelligence to give recommendations.

Booking Cabs

After school, Adam plans to book Uber to go to his football class. He decides to use the ride-share option to save some money. When he books a cab, all the nearby drivers get a notification. One of them accepts the booking and then reaches the location specified by Adam. He is then picked up and dropped off at the specified location. This is also AI in action.

Product Recommendations

Adam realises during his football class that he doesn’t have a winter football jersey. He had bought his football shoes from Amazon. He feels online shopping is quick and easy. So he goes back to the shopping app that prompts him to buy certain products based on his past purchases. It is done through artificial intelligence. It helps shopping apps like Amazon to do more business while helping the buyers to make quick purchasing decisions.

Job Hunting

When Adam comes home from his football class, his mother reminds him that he has not applied for his summer internship. Within a few months all the vacant positions will get over, and he won’t get any opportunity for his internship next year. Adam quickly uploads his CV on a job portal. A chatbot appears that asks him a few basic questions like where he is looking for internship, his current location, area of expertise, interest, etc. Within minutes, it lists him all the available open positions that help him apply for his summer internship with ease. AI helps to narrow down the search by matching his skill sets and his desired location with the open positions.

Auto-Pilot Aeroplane

Adam’s uncle visits them for dinner. He is a commercial pilot. He is happy to meet Adam. He gets him a gift, a metal model of Boeing 777. Adam is thrilled, and he thanks his uncle. He also tells him that he has been reading about various aeroplanes and how the pilots put it on auto-pilot mode for most of the flight time. Adam’s uncle is amused at his knowledge and adds that in future, there is a possibility that jetliners would be completely piloted by artificial intelligence — with no human pilots at the helm.

Alarm and Timers

Adam is ready for bed. He had a long day. He asks a virtual assistant to set up an alarm for the next morning. He has a busy day tomorrow and would like to start early. The virtual assistant checks if he wants it to be for 6 am based on his past history, to which Adam replies in the affirmative. In fact, he asks the assistant to set it up on repeat mode for all weekdays. So simple! Finally, Adam goes off to sleep.

With Adam, we learn that Artificial Intelligence is an integral part of our modern lives. It makes our day-to-day activities efficient and faster. Be it sending emails, booking a cab, or even connecting with friends, everything has artificial intelligence behind it.

What do you feel? Will Artificial Intelligence help us make our lives better in the future? Will it be a boon or a bane? Or do you prefer the traditional ways of managing projects, activities, friendships, or travel? Share your thoughts. We would love to hear from you.
